Problem
The chord through two points and on a parabola passes through the focus . Drop perpendiculars from , , and to the directrix, meeting it at , , and . Among five trigonometric ratios, find the ones equal to . The figure and the options are on the CEEC 111 AST Mathematics I paper.
Where it goes wrong
The official item analysis records a score rate of . Options ③, ④, and ⑤ are the hard ones. The way through is not another equation for the parabola. First mark the equal lengths from “distance to the focus equals distance to the directrix”, then complete the right triangles.
Idea
Set
The two equalities are the definition of the parabola. The projection lines , , and are all perpendicular to the directrix, so they are parallel. Since , , and are collinear, the focal chord makes the same acute angle with each of those lines. Call that angle . Then
The angle in option ③ is , so
In right triangle (right angle at ), because (alternate angles), so option ⑤ gives
The correct options are ③ and ⑤, matching the official answer key.
What the figure shows
- Drag Height of A (schematic scale). The other end of the focal chord, the three projection lines, and the ratio all move together.
- Look first at the gold segment and the gold focal chord. Since , option ③ rewrites as the ratio the question asks for.
- The blue line is . The tangent in option ⑤ is , and it stays equal to the ratio the question asks for.
